A 1ST DEGREE BURN
IS JUST LIKE SUNBURN.

TRUE True answer

A 1st degree burn is just like a sunburn. It affects the outermost layer of skin only and causes the affected area to turn red and painful. Superficial skin burns also often itch due to histamine release.

YOUR SKIN GET DRYER
WHEN YOU'RE SICK.

TRUE wrong answer

Colds and flus suck moisture out of our skin leaving it feeling dry and dull. The illnesses themselves, coupled with the medications we are taking, and the fact that many of us are bedridden, leads to skin being deprived of moisture.

LICKING CHAPPED
LIPS IS A GOOD IDEA.

FALSE wrong answer

People with dry and chapped lips often lick them frequently, and pick or bite off flaking skin. It’s so tempting isn’t it, but this only aggravates the situation by ridding skin of its natural protective layer and triggering a vicious cycle.

WHAT SLOWS
DOWN HEALING?

Certain factors slow down healing:

Damage to the skin, or “lesions” can be either epidermal (affecting the most superficial layer of skin and non-bleeding) or dermal (affecting the deeper layer of skin and bleeding). Whenever the dermis is affected, all wounds, burns, surgical incisions, or infections leave behind some kind of scar. That is not to say that all scars are equal: The goal of any treatment is to improve the healing process for the best-looking scar possible, which should be flat, supple and close to your skin tone.

  • Age: The skin heals faster in young people.
  • Diet: An unbalanced diet lacking in vitamins and trace elements can lead to slower healing.
  • Diabetes: Wounds may heal very slowly in poorly controlled diabetes.
  • Smoking: Results in decreased oxygenation of the wound and slower healing.
  • Certain medicines: Immunosuppressants and corticosteroids can delay healing.

HOW CAN YOU
SPEED UP HEALING?

The above are your healing “foes” but you have plenty of “friends” too! To boost healing:

  • Eat a balanced diet rich in sources of protein and fresh fruit and vegetables.
  • Make sure you get your recommended hours of sleep per night (8 is a good rule of thumb for adults).
  • Keep your wound hygienic and clean.
  • Apply a reputable wound healing cream with targeted active ingredients to accelerate your skin’s repair.

In this section, you will learn how to promote skin healing in different situations:

  • Nappy rash: How to soothe and repair irritated baby skin with products safe from the first day of life.
  • Scars and stitches: How to optimise scar healing, reduce scarring from stitches, protect scars from the sun and use scar massage techniques.
  • Burns: How to manage a household burn and when to seek medical attention.
  • Post-procedure skin: How to speed up skin healing after an aesthetic procedure like a peel or laser treatment.
  • Tattoos: How to care for your new tattoo to keep it looking sharp, bright and beautiful.
  • Localised skin damage: How to enhance the recovery of red and raw skin after a cold, when you have lip problems like cheilitis, or when you have fragile nail issues.

How to quickly
heal a wound

Find out our dermatologist's tips to heal a minor wound

My name is Steven, this is my son Jack who is 10 years old. My son is a very active boy, always playing sports riding his bicycle, climbing trees... Inevitably he falls often, maybe leaving a small wound. What is the best way for me to heal a wound like this as quickly as possible?
If the wound is very superficial, let it dry in the open air. Otherwise it is important to keep it moist to stimulate cell renewal. So you have to clean it with a disinfectant without alcohol and gently pat dry. Then apply a healing cream to keep the wound wet and moist, so no scab can form, and the scar will be smaller. Then place a bandage on the wound and change regularly. Don't forget to apply sunscreen to avoid
hyperpigmentation.

How to get rid of
baby cradle cap

Find out our dermatologist's adice to cure cradle crap.
When my baby Leonor, who is two months now, when she was younger she had a problem with cradle cap which i think is quite normal for babies but I didn't really know what to do. So I googled it,
as one does and the thing that came up was coconut oil and I thought it helped, but it didn't really. So yeah I'd like to know what actually can help cradle cap.
Yes you're right, cradle cap is common and often it's the first sign or first presentation of eczema. The best way to treat it is to
put an oil on the scalp 50 minutes before shampooing and then with either a recommended baby shampoo,or indeed the
gentle soap that you're using for the
baby's body, wash the hair and use a rotatory movement to try and loosen the crusts. It's very important not to pick it or pull it for fear of pulling out any clumps of hair.  In terms of what oils to use, I would avoid using any nut oils, in particular peanut and almond, for
fear of allergy in the longer term.
